Getting married in The Kennebec Valley

The Kennebec Valley runs up the middle of the state from Augusta and Hallowell through Waterville and Skowhegan toward The Forks and the Canadian border. It is the least "destination" region on this list and, for a certain kind of wedding, the most sensible one — because it is central, well connected to I-95, and materially cheaper than the coast.

If half your guest list is in Maine already, this is often where the maths works. If they are all flying in, the coast will do more of the persuading for you.

Getting here

Portland (PWM) is about an hour to Augusta, a little over an hour to Waterville. Bangor (BGR) is comparable from the north. Boston (BOS) is 3–3.5 hours.

The real advantage is I-95. Most of the region is within fifteen minutes of an interstate exit, which means guests arrive without the last-mile dirt-road problem that defines rural coastal venues. Say so — it reassures people more than you would expect.

Belgrade Lakes and the Forks are the exceptions, and both involve genuine back roads.

Where your guests stay

Lower inventory than the coast, but also far less competition for it, and prices that do not spike the way seaside towns do.

• Augusta — the largest cluster of chain hotels in the region, right off I-95, unromantic and completely reliable for a block.
• Waterville — a growing set of options downtown alongside the usual highway hotels.
• Hallowell — a handful of small inns and rentals in a very pretty riverfront village; charming, and too small to house a whole wedding.
• The Belgrade Lakes — camps and lake rentals rather than hotels. Excellent for a wedding party taking a house for the week, awkward for a general block.
• Skowhegan and north — thin, and thinner again as you head toward The Forks.

Because rooms here are not scarce, you can leave blocks later than you could on the coast. Do not extend that assumption to a fall foliage weekend.

Things to do

Less obvious than the coast, which means guests need actual suggestions:

• Whitewater rafting on the Kennebec at The Forks — dam-released, so it runs reliably through the summer. The strongest single recommendation in the region and a genuinely good day out for a wedding party.
• The Belgrade Lakes — swimming, boat rentals and the village, about twenty minutes from Waterville or Augusta.
• The Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville — a substantial free collection that most visitors have no idea exists.
• Hallowell — antique shops, restaurants and a walkable riverfront main street. The best hour a guest can spend here.
• The Maine State House and the Blaine House, Augusta.
• The Kennebec River Rail Trail — an easy paved path linking Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner.

The valley is also the most central base in the state, so guests with a spare day can reach the coast, the lakes or the mountains in about ninety minutes.
