A 200-year-old post-and-beam barn on a working farm in Pownal, ten minutes from Freeport and about half an hour north of Portland. The barn is 40 by 80 feet with the original hand-hewn beams and boards, brass chandeliers, a double-sided bar and a loft, and it seats up to 170 for dinner. Acres of mown lawn around a pond and perennial gardens take a tent if you want one, though the barn holds the full guest count without it.
The booking is a weekend rather than a day. They take one wedding per weekend, you set up Friday, hold the wedding Saturday, and nothing has to be cleared until Sunday — which makes a rehearsal dinner in the barn and a day-after brunch straightforward rather than an add-on. A bridal suite with its own bathroom is included in every package for getting ready. The season runs early May to early November.
Three things to budget for. Tables and chairs are not included and have to be rented. You are required to carry $1,000,000 event liability insurance naming the farm as additional insured, which they estimate at around $200, plus host liquor liability if there is alcohol. And a day-of coordinator is required — a full wedding planner is not, but the coordinator is not optional. Catering and bar service are expected to come from their preferred list; anyone off it needs prior approval. There is no lodging on the property.
