Getting married in Aroostook County

Aroostook is the top of the state and it is enormous — larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, with a fraction of the people. Potato fields, forest, the St. John Valley's Acadian French culture, and winters that are taken seriously.

Marrying here almost always means one of two things: you are from here, or you want somewhere genuinely remote and are willing to make the trip the point rather than the obstacle. Either way, the guest list has to be told the truth about the distance early, because the drive from Portland is comparable to driving from Portland to Philadelphia.

Getting here

Presque Isle (PQI) has limited scheduled service and is the only airport actually in the county. Bangor (BGR) is around 2.5 hours from Houlton and 3.5 or more from Presque Isle. Portland is 5 to 7 hours depending how far north you go.

I-95 ends at Houlton. Everything beyond is two-lane road.

Guests coming from Canada should be reminded that a passport is required to cross, which is easy to forget when the border feels this local.

In winter, allow for weather in a way you would not further south. Plans here are made with a snow contingency as standard.

Where your guests stay

Modest and functional. Nobody is coming to Aroostook for a boutique hotel, and rates reflect that.

• Presque Isle and Caribou — the main cluster of chain and independent hotels, and the practical block for most of the county.
• Houlton — the southern gateway at the end of I-95, useful for guests breaking the drive.
• Fort Kent and Madawaska — small inns and motels in the St. John Valley.
• Sporting camps and lakeside cabins — scattered across the county, often the most memorable option and usually the right one for a wedding party.

Availability is rarely the constraint outside of specific events. Check whether your date collides with the Can-Am Crown sled dog races in Fort Kent or a biathlon event at the Nordic centres, which do fill the local rooms.

Things to do

• The Allagash Wilderness Waterway — 92 miles of protected river and lakes, and one of the great canoe trips in the country. A serious expedition, not an afternoon.
• The St. John Valley — Acadian culture, French still spoken daily, and the Acadian Village near Van Buren.
• The Nordic Heritage Center, Presque Isle — a world-class cross-country skiing and biathlon venue that hosts international competition.
• Aroostook State Park — Maine's first state park, with Quaggy Jo Mountain and an easy climb for the view over the farmland.
• The potato harvest in autumn, when schools still break for it, is a genuinely distinctive thing to witness.
• Dark skies — with almost no light pollution, the stargazing is among the best in the eastern United States. On a clear night the northern lights are a real possibility.

That last one is worth building into an evening. It is the sort of thing guests who grumbled about the drive stop grumbling about.
